Program Description
Led by Giulia Tonelli, former First Soloist of Ballett Zürich, this exclusive three-day intensive offers dancers the opportunity to explore selected choreographic material from Crystal Pite’s Emergence.
Having performed Emergence with Ballett Zürich and later worked on the piece in a coaching and rehearsal capacity, Tonelli brings direct experience of its distinctive movement language and demanding ensemble work.
Throughout the programme, participants will immerse themselves in Crystal Pite’s choreographic language, exploring the relationship between individual movement and the collective, together with the fragmented, gestural and highly physical qualities that characterise Emergence.
Drawing on her experience performing and rehearsing the work, Giulia Tonelli will guide dancers through selected repertoire from Emergence, focusing on its movement qualities, musicality, precision and complex group structures.
Created for the National Ballet of Canada in 2009, Emergence draws inspiration from swarm behaviour and the organisation of insect societies, exploring how individual dancers become part of a larger, constantly evolving choreographic system.
Created for dancers seeking an in-depth repertory experience, the intensive offers a unique opportunity to encounter the choreographic world of Crystal Pite, one of the leading choreographic voices of contemporary dance and ballet.
